Description
Ace in Space was captured on the first ascent of Sea of Dreams on Yosemite's El Capitan in May/June of 1978. Dale Bard had just come up to the famous Rurp Belay, a somewhat sketchy belay off of 5 rurps and 2 bolts. The pitch continued on the Rurp seam and meandered upwards through a continuous collage of tiny placements just on the north side of body weight. On this route that seemed to be business as usual except this one had a bleak belay anchor but it was overhanging and we were tethered to our bivi anchors several pitches below so if in fact he ripped all the way to our anchors we still had a contingency plan... sort of. The afternoon updraft was really violent so it was a constant battle to retain the tag line in reasonable order. Dale, being the consummate professional that he was, charged in reckless abandon but always in control. Although this pitch didn't end up being one of the crux's it had a serious head-space with the potential 300+' fall if he ripped through and the anchors failed.
