Description
The genesis of the KB Portrait stems from a deep-rooted friendship and a spirit of exploration. Back in my early days at Ravenswood High School, KB and I shared numerous classes, seated side by side, our chatter and laughter filling the air. Though our connection never crossed into romantic territory, she became more akin to a sister than a mere friend. As our bond blossomed, so did her fascination with climbing, eventually leading her to join our band of adventurers bound for Yosemite shortly after graduation.
In time, KB found her calling as a guide with the esteemed Yosemite Mountaineering School, blazing trails as one of its pioneering female guides.
One wintry excursion amidst the towering Sequoias of Mariposa Grove sparked a creative vision within me. I envisioned a double exposure shot, utilizing a zoom lens against a backdrop of darkness to imbue the image with a mystical allure. Armed with my newly acquired Nikkor 80-200 zoom lens, I mounted it on my tripod and captured the initial frame, painting the background in deep, velvety blackness. With KB as my focal point for the second exposure, I carefully maintained the film position in my Nikkormat camera, capturing her essence with eyes closed to minimize any movement in the dim light.
In the confines of the darkroom, weeks later, my vision materialized into reality. Intuition, foresight, and a touch of serendipity were the alchemy of my craft in those days of film photography.
