Artist's Description
"Midnight Lightning" was captured near Zion National Park during an unusually active electrical storm. I get excited watching lightning storms that produce a strike every 5-10 minutes. This one was every 5-10 seconds. As enthralling as it is photographing these light shows it's also borderline risk management keeping safe and keeping the equipment dry and out of harms way. Oftentimes in Southern Utah these are accompanied by micro-burst cells that can generate winds in excess of 80 mph so the element of danger is real. I've been photographing night scenes for over 40 years and resort to "experienced intuition" for achieving the results that I want. In this image the nuanced layers of mountains, red sandstone and the lightning bolts which bring about varied colors depending on their intensity, all had a part to be played. In my film days this was accomplished by meticulous notes from prior sessions and hoping for the best when the film was developed. With digital, which this was capture...
