Description
Pillows Before the Temple was captured the day after a snowstorm that blanketed the floor of Zion National Park and peaks. Snow pillows, as well as the sparkles that the fresh snow create, vanish within a few hours of sunlight. In this image I was challenged with a wide dynamic range as well as an extreme depth of field needed to maintain a sharp focus from 8" to over a mile from the camera. Traditionally with a large format camera this would be accomplished with a tilt-shift lens and very small aperture like f/64 which I didn't have but wanted the "look". This was captured with a Nikon Z7 and a 70-200s lens at 70mm at f/8 using 14 images to "focus stack" the images to combine the wide range of focal points and then blending them together in post processing. This allows me to use the "sweet-spot" of the lens (f/8-f/11) optimizing the best clarity of the lens while pushing the focal length to way beyond an f/22 setting. The green new growth on the bushes and background cottonwood trees happens just prior to spring and ads a symphony of color to the otherwise winter scene.
