Artist's Description
Jim Bridwell (R.I.P.) El Capitan Yosemite National Park was captured the morning we set sail on the Sea of Dreams on May 27th 1978 . We got to our fixed ropes at the base of El Cap and each fished around under the rocks for our harnesses that we had stashed on the prior day. Dale Bard & I made haste getting ours out but Jim was farting around in the forest below as if looking for the lost ark. “Um, we’re sorta ready to go” I impatiently mumbled loud enough for the old guy to hear.
“I gotta find a stick” he snapped back having none of my scuttle. Moments later with stick in hand he goes to retrieve his harness under the boulder where it was hidden. Low and behold when he fetched it out with the stick, a baby rattlesnake came out with it.
I can’t explain this but Jim had this 6th sense, guardian angels or perhaps a divine power that was always present when climbing. Promptly, as if to let the lesson sink in a bit, he lit an unfiltered Camel and ever so slowl...
